The National Organisation of Trade Unions (NOTU) has renewed its call to the government to expedite the implementation of the Minimum Wage Bill, emphasizing the importance of protecting workers across both formal and informal sectors. The organization noted that many Ugandan workers continue to face exploitation due to the absence of a legally enforceable wage structure.

During a press briefing held at the NOTU headquarters in Kampala, Chairman General Usher Wilson Owere stated that “a national minimum wage is essential to ensure fair pay, industrial harmony, and decent living conditions for all Ugandan workers.” He urged the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development to prioritize the Bill’s passage in Parliament and to align it with international labour standards.

The call comes amid rising living costs and growing unemployment, which have severely affected low-income earners and informal sector workers. NOTU leaders believe that the introduction of a fair and standardized minimum wage will foster equitable economic growth and reduce income inequality.

NOTU reaffirmed its commitment to continue advocating for workers’ rights through dialogue, training, and partnerships with both government and private sector institutions. The organization also encouraged affiliated unions to raise awareness about fair pay and report cases of wage discrimination through the NOTU legal helpdesk.
