Kampala – September 10, 2024:

Richard Bigirwa, the Secretary-General of the National Organisation of Trade Unions (NOTU), has been appointed as a workers’ representative on the Board of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF).

Bigirwa joins the Board under the representation of NOTU, replacing Lwabayi Mudiba Hassan. His appointment forms part of the newly constituted Board of Directors appointed by Betty Amongi, Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, for a three-year term effective September 1, 2024.

The appointment reflects the continued involvement of workers’ representatives in guiding the strategic direction and governance of the National Social Security Fund. Through the representation of trade unions, workers’ interests remain a central component in the oversight of the Fund, which manages the retirement savings of millions of Ugandan workers.

As a representative under NOTU, Bigirwa is expected to contribute to strengthening accountability, transparency, and the sustainable growth of the Fund while ensuring that workers’ voices are effectively represented at the Board level.

The National Organisation of Trade Unions welcomed the appointment, noting that the inclusion of its leadership in national institutions helps advance policies that promote workers’ welfare, social protection, and inclusive economic development.

The newly appointed Board is tasked with overseeing the management of the Fund and ensuring that it continues to operate securely, profitably, and in the best interest of workers and the country.
